Welcome to the EastWest Blog. I am a linguist, lawyer, teacher and writer. I have degrees in Russian Literature, Slavic Languages, Linguistics, and Law, from Rutgers University and the University of California, Berkeley. I was born in Soviet Russia to Holocaust survivors from Belarus and Ukraine and lived in Poland before emigrating to the U.S.  I speak several languages and read a good number more.  I’d like to share with you here my take on an eclectic range of topics, from cross-cultural communication to ’60s garage punk rock, though my focus is primarily on the language of propaganda, the media, and human rights & civil society, particularly in Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet states. Read about my journey here. You can usually find me on Twitter @PaulaChertok.

I do not do
Facebook or Twitter but came across your website tonight. My name is also Paula Chertok. My father’s family were Russian. Maybe we are related. If so, hello!
